Virginia Stage Company is Southeastern Virginia's only fully professional resident theatre company. With operations and performances based at the historic Wells Theatre, they have been a key piece of the tremendous revitalization that has taken place in downtown Norfolk over the last 15 years. Virginia Stage Company's Education Department takes the show on the road, offering workshops and in-school performances to dozens of schools throughout the region on an annual basis. Thousands more school children attend student matinee performances at the Wells Theatre for many of the shows.
Operating as a not for profit organization, they are highly dependent on funding from government agencies, corporate sponsorships and individual donations to help sustain the quality of their work. Over the years they have experienced cut-backs in government funding of the arts, the "ups and the downs" of the stock market (with the "downs" having a big negative impact on individual donations), and even temporary unforeseen box office shortfalls resulting from the huge construction projects within a block of the theatre (creating the perception that access to both the theatre and parking is difficult or limited). Throughout these challenges, they have been forced to make the difficult decisions to keep the company running.
Wherever you live, there are undoubtedly one or more regional arts organizations that have faced similar or unique financial and operational challenges of their own. They, too, deserve your support.
